Earlier summer registration

For summer 2018, degree-seeking students will be able to register on March 1, 2018. Open registration for non-degree and visiting students starts a week later on March 8.

Earlier registration before spring break extends the regular registration period one and half months, which gives students more time to plan and spreads out appointment times for advisors. The change could help increase classroom utilization and enrollment during the summer term. In turn, a higher enrollment rate during summer may help students with timely degree progress.

Micro grant for One Stop’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

One Stop Student Services’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, along with partners from the Office of Student Finance, recently received a Campus Climate Micro Grant. The grant will fund name tags that include personal pronouns for public-facing One Stop Student Services and Office of Student Finance staff.

This effort aims to increase competence about personal pronouns and show commitment to create an inclusive environment for our students, staff, and community. Prior to receiving this grant, the committee laid a foundation through presentations and trainings in ASR. Opportunities to expand this initiative to other interested ASR staff may be available in the near future.

Tech Tuesdays return on January 30!

Tech Tuesdays are casual events over lunch that give ASR employees a chance to learn, share, and discuss technology-related topics—all with a bit of fun. Each event includes an informal peer presentation or demonstration followed by questions and discussion, all taking place over lunch (bring your own!).

Here’s the schedule and topics for the first three events:
  • 1/30/18 - Google Docs (12pm in Fraser B20)
  • 2/13/18 - Web conferencing (location TBD)
  • 2/27/18 - Organizing with Google Keep (location TBD)
In March and April we will focus on keyboard shortcuts, security, meeting room technology, and a “tour” of the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).

What is your expertise? Anyone in ASR is welcome to participate or lead an event. Share topic ideas or volunteer to lead a Tech Tuesday. To receive ongoing news about Tech Tuesdays, join the ASR Tech Tuesday Google Group.

DARS to be upgraded to uAchieve

A long-term project is in its beginning stages as the University of Minnesota plans to upgrade its Degree Audit and Transfer Articulation (DARS) functionality. The plan is to keep our current software vendor, CollegeSource, and move from a very old, COBOL-based version of their software, DARwin 3.5.4, to their newest, java-based version, uAchieve 4.4.x.

The project is expected to last two years and will be lead by ASR and OIT. The first year will focus on the base software upgrade, and the second year will focus on redesigning our system integration with PeopleSoft in order to maximize business benefits of the upgrade. The project will rely on staff from ASR, Admissions, OIT, the vendor’s services team, and partners on all 5 campuses for expertise. We hope to begin the vendor services engagement in July 2018, although the timing depends on negotiations with CollegeSource.

The upgrade will:
  • Improve system security
  • Add core functionality
  • Provide us the ability to better maintain this software over time.
  • Retire some system customizations made over the past 10-20 years
This software has a large and complex impact on undergraduate student services, so the work will require partnership and assistance from many campus stakeholders. While upgrading the system, a few key business benefits are expected:
  • A new web-based user interface for degree audits
  • New Peoplesoft pre- and co-requisite checking for transfer courses
  • Improved consistency of business practices and data related to degree encoding
  • Better University-wide analysis of student degree progress
For questions, contact project manager Santiago Fernandez-Gimenez (ferna010@umn.edu).

New transfer evaluation system going live

Academic Support Resources, in partnership with U of M Admissions, is launching a new Transfer Evaluation System for students. Students will largely interface with this system through the Admissions website and Transferology, a national, public database of transfer evaluated courses.

The project helps students with effective and efficient degree planning. Prospective and newly admitted students learn about how their existing coursework will transfer to the U of M's Twin Cities campus, and current students can explore courses from other institutions that could fulfill their degree requirements. For courses that haven't been evaluated, students will now be able to submit them for review through an online form. More information will be forthcoming.

ASR printers have new names (Windows only)

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has been in the process of updating print servers, and as a result, names of printers in ASR will change. This only affects University-supported Windows computers. If you work on a Windows computer, printers will automatically be renamed starting January 9. There is no action to take, just be aware. View the old/new printer names in the tables below.

If you have problems printing to a new printer name or lose access to printers you previously had, contact the OIT print migration team at pmt@umn.edu.
